JUST RECOVERY FOR ALL

Fridays For Future Toronto supports a #JustRecoveryForAll from COVID-19

WHAT IS A JUST RECOVERY?

A Just Recovery describes Canada’s transition from our current situation to a post-COVID world. A Just Recovery represents an opportunity for the Canadian government to put the environment and vulnerable communities first in rebuilding Canada’s economy.

Normal was a crisis. Normal was an impending climate catastrophe, a plague of economic inequality, and a lack of infrastructure to support vulnerable communities through public crises. In moving away from this event, the government must put forward policies and investments, in line with a Green New Deal, that phase out fossil fuels and prioritize renewable energy, healthcare, climate action, and the social safety net.

Fridays for Future Toronto endorses the justrecoveryforall.ca principles outlined below!

Dear Mr./Ms./Mrs. [name],

My name is [blank] and I am a constituent of your riding. I am a community member who is concerned about climate change, the well-being of Canadians, and the future of our economy.

Despite the hardship COVID-19 has brought, I believe that we can come out of this crisis stronger and more resilient than ever before. I urge you to use your platform and power to invest in Canadians, not fossil fuel companies or prosperous corporations, to mitigate the long-term effects of this crisis and guarantee that it never happens again. To effectively do so, you must endorse the 6 principles of a green and just recovery:

  • Put people’s health and well being first

  • Strengthen the social safety net and provide relief directly to people

  • Prioritize the needs of workers and communities

  • Build resilience to prevent future crises

  • Build solidarity and equity across communities, generations, and borders

  • Uphold Indigenous Rights and work in partnership with Indigenous peoples

Time is quickly passing and your window to make this change is closing. You must act now to lift up marginalized communities, reallocate resources to areas in need, and ensure that Canada will surpass its climate commitments. The people of your riding and this country at-large are waiting for action.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
